King's College London leak confidential student information

Yesterday, King’s College London (KCL) leaked a list of all the students who had applied for intercalated BSc's at their university for the current academic year. This was accidentally sent out in an email to about twenty students. The list contained – amongst other things – information regarding students' disabilities, including dyslexia, “mental illness such as depression”, "chronic or long-standing illness" and "deafness".

This is a massive breach of KCL’s Data Protection guidance and of the Data Protection Act of 1998.
In addition to this list, the document leaked contained all the marks of students studying medicine at KCL from years 1-4 (together with their name and candidate number).

Students from KCL are outraged and are still in the dark as to how this could possibly have happened. A lot of students are concerned that their personal information is not securely kept by the KCL administrative staff and many are worried as to what else could be released in the same way.
KCL have stated that this was a very regrettable incident and “apologised unreservedly for this error”.

An investigation is currently underway.
